The Dana 44 on my CJ5 has tapered axles which have to be removed with a puller. There are no inner oils seals. The axle bearing's are packed with wheel bearing grease and are right behind the backing plates. Behind them are the outer oil seals. I replaced the outer seals and the pinion bearing seal.

Axle has been sandblasted and sprayed with Por-15 metal ready. |
New pinion seal |
Backing plates blasted |
After spraying with metal ready the metal will flash rust which helps the Por-15 adhere to the metal |
2 coats of Por-15 with 2 coats chassis coat black |
Tapered axles |
The new seal has to be modified for the wheel cylinder to fit |
